The classic American blocky bell capsicum, improved for heat tolerance and disease resistance from the older Californian Wonder line. Fruit is thick-walled, crisp, juicy, and sweet — four-lobed and blocky, 9–10cm wide, ripening from deep emerald green to brilliant red. Dense foliage acts as its own shade cloth, protecting the fruit from sunburn even in hot inland summers. Compact 60cm plants suit garden beds and large pots equally.

Choose a full-sun spot with shelter from cold winds. Yolo Wonder's compact habit suits garden beds and large pots (30L+).

Soil preparation: Amend soil with aged compost or well-rotted manure to ensure fertility and drainage; maintain a pH between 6.0 and 7.0.

Support: Light staking helps once heavy fruit clusters develop — the compact plant can lean under multiple ripening capsicums.

Watering & feeding: Water deeply and consistently to keep soil evenly moist; feed with a liquid fertiliser high in potassium once flowering begins. Mulch heavily to retain soil moisture through summer.

Harvest: Pick green for classic grassy capsicum flavour, or leave to fully ripen to red for peak sweetness and vitamin content. Cut with secateurs to avoid breaking branches. Regular picking encourages more fruit.

Short season tips
